What is “smart water”?
What does that mean?
Smart Water, by definition, refers to a network of smart water meters and infrastructure that uses technology to help water utilities manage their water systems efficiently. But to us, it means just a little bit more. To us, it is about the big picture; how to use water smartly, minimally, and with purpose.
There are five ways to maximize your water usage and or increase efficiencies:
- Phone accessible Weather Station Timers (B-Hyve Smart Controller from Orbit)
- Drip systems for plants
- Sub-surface drip systems (watering from underground) for lawns (Rain Bird’s Sub-Surface with Copper Shield Technology)
- Artificial Turf
- Xeriscaping (virtually waterless plantings)
With respect to water consumption, the less we use, the better off we are. However, not using water is not exactly an option. Along with water efficiencies in your landscaping, here are some other ideas to lesson your water usage:
- Take shorter showers (or every take them every other day)
- Install “low-flow” shower heads
- Install “water wise” toilets
- Repair leaky faucets and hose bibs
- Install rain barrels to catch water (irrespective of being legal or not!)
- Wash vehicles with a hose that has a nozzle that shuts off

I grew up in Death Valley, California and, after a number of pitstops, found my way home to Vacaville. I started working for my father Marvin L. Braa of Marvins Gardens in 1999. With a pick in one hand and a shovel in the other, I learned to love and appreciate what we created that inherently changed peoples lives: Landscape Construction. Coupled with my A.A.S. Degree, licenses, and various certifications, I started Scotland Yards Concrete & Landscaping in 2002.

Grandma fell ill in 2002 and was unable to maintain her beloved garden alone anymore. I stepped in to assist and was blessed to inherit her 50 years of knowledge of horticulture. In that time, I discovered my love of plants, entomology (beneficial insects), and the great outdoors. Soon after, I enrolled in Solano Community College (under the direct tutelage of Ken Williams), receiving my CA in Horticulture Sciences; completing Master Gardeners and Cooperative Extension (continued education). As a native of Solano County, I am intimately familiar with our plant zones and hidden pockets (micro-climates). It has been - and will continue to be - a pleasure sharing my Grandmothers wisdom along with new techniques and advancements in horticulture.
